Auto Insurance Information

Indiana state law requires you to have auto liability insurance, and if you still owe money on your car, your lender requires that you also carry collision and comprehensive coverage. Auto insurance pays for damages, injuries, and other losses specifically covered by your policy. Read your policy carefully to know exactly what it covers. Pay special attention to the exclusions section, which lists the things your policy doesn't cover. The front page of your policy is called the declarations page. It contains useful information such as the exact name of your insurance company, your policy number, and the amount of each of your coverages and deductibles.

Auto Insurance basics:

  • Collision Coverage covers your vehicle if you are in an accident.  This coverage is intended to repair your vehicle to the condition it was in before the accident.
  • Comprehensive Coverage covers your vehicle if your vehicle is stolen or sustains damage from something other than an accident- such as a hailstorm.
  • A Deductible is the amount that you pay toward a loss under collision and comprehensive coverage.  This amount is paid first, before your insurance policy provides coverage.
  • Liability Insurance covers a claim against you for damage that you caused by hitting someone or their property.
  •  Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage protects you if someone without auto insurance or without enough auto insurance hits you.

Some info for young driver's in your family.

INDIANA'S PROBATIONARY DRIVER''S LICENSING SYSTEM

In 1997, Indiana implemented a Graduated Driver's License provision into Indiana law.  This law created a "probationary driver's license" for individuals who are under the age of 18.  The probationary driver's license is automatically issued to drivers when they pass the written and driving exams required by the state.  The license carries all of the same requirements and responsibilities of a regular driver's licens, with several additional requirements that are designed to help young drivers learn and become more responsible at a slower pace.
A driver holds a probationary license in Indiana from the time he or she receives his or her license until turning 19 years of age, at which time a regular license will be issued.  There are several additional requirements that  probationary drivers must adhere to.  They are:
-A probationary driver may not operate a motor vehicle after 11:00 p.m. Sunday night through Thursday night and after 12:00 midnight on Friday and Saturday, unless they are in transit to or from a place of employment.
-During the first 90 days after the issuance of a probationary license, a driver must have a 21-year-old licensed driver in the front seat in which other passengers are in the vehicle.
-All occupants in a vehicle being operated by a probationary driver must wear safety belts-in both the front and back seats.
